Once upon a time, Alex Kidd was the mascot of SEGA – and games about him came out, and comics. But when it was necessary to create a character that could compete with Mario, they forgot about the boy and paid more and more attention to Sonic. The Alex Kidd series died for several decades, and suddenly they decided to resurrect it by making a remake of the first game – Alex Kidd in Miracle World in 1986. But does anyone need it nowadays?

A New Look

In the version called Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, first of all, the visual side has changed. The very poor environment, typical for games from the Master System, plays here with completely different colors. If you wish, you can press R2 at any time and switch between the original and the remake, as in Halo: The Master Chief Collection and the upcoming Diablo II: Resurrected.

Flat boxes, hanging in the air and lying on the ground, have gained volume. The infamous little clouds have greatly increased in size, and the attacked castle is now on fire. Alex Kidd himself has also become prettier, to say nothing of the bosses. However, the decisions of the artists are not successful in all cases – in a cave, for example, stalactites hanging under the ceiling are painted as if they are located in the background, while in reality the character beats his head against them.

The difference is huge.

Although DX falls short of modern platformers in terms of visuals, a lot of work has been done. When you switch from the remake to the original, you involuntarily laugh at how all this splendor looked in 1986 – without visual effects, with a very limited number of colors and large pixels.

Injustice after injustice

In the gameplay, the developers of Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX did not change almost anything. This is the same platformer, divided into two dozen levels – either you go through an obstacle course of colorful balls, or you swim underwater, or you find yourself in a castle with traps. The locations are small, and you just need to get to the finish line safe and sound in order to jump into the door leading to the next level or meet the boss.

… But it is difficult to return to it – the remake looks very nice.

The difficulty remained high, but this is due only to the fact that the game has very unpredictable physics and many dishonest situations. You never know what Alex will do after the jump: whether he will hit the platform exactly, whether he will roll off it due to idiotic inertia, whether he will hit the enemy because of stupid hitboxes. Management is very “wooden”, just like in the original.

At the same time, there is nothing here that would encourage you to suffer and play to the end. Except perhaps for the platinum trophy, which is knocked out in one evening. There is really no plot – the intro video tells about the villain who turned all the peasants into stone statues, and then everything is very banal and predictable. Alex has almost no abilities – he only jumps, bends down (this will never come in handy) and punches.

Every time it’s scary to make this jump.

Passing the levels, you come across bags of money and gold boxes containing the same currency. However, there is no point in collecting all this – of course, you can buy additional “lives” and even vehicles in stores, but there is no need to waste time on this. Vehicles make the levels too boring, and three “lives” is more than enough in the vast majority of episodes. When the attempts are over, you are thrown back to the beginning of the level. The maps are too short to be inconvenient.

Plus, boss fights seem even more ridiculous in the remake. In each such fight, it is possible to “break” the mechanics – either kill the boss before he starts doing something, or get close to him and dodge all attacks. And sometimes they are invited to play Rock, Paper, Scissors. Three attempts, game up to two wins; lost – try again. Opponents do not change tactics in case of your failure, so you can just remember their actions. In a sense, this is a “feature” of the game, so they left it in the remake, but it doesn’t get better from this.

It is surprising that such a boring performance gathered so many spectators.

When you complete the first playthrough, two modes are unlocked in the menu. The first is the ability to play the classic Alex Kidd in Miracle World in high definition and without saving. The second is alternate battles with four story bosses, where in case of death (and only one attempt is given), you start everything from the very beginning. The mechanics do not change, and in the game “Rock, paper, scissors” you have to win before each fight. Stupid, one-time mode, which is needed only for “achievement”.

It’s not entirely clear who Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is made for. Fans of the original, most likely, have already lost interest in games. New audiences will abandon the remake after the first level due to clunky controls and primitive location design. If you want a quality and varied platform game, there is Kaze and The Wild Masks and a bunch of other great entertainment. Like a museum piece, antiques hidden under an updated picture, the game is hardly interesting to anyone and not worth the money. But thanks for the easy “platinum” – the time was not completely wasted.

Pros: improved graphics makes the game much brighter than its predecessor; easy platinum prize.

Cons: the gameplay has not changed – unpredictable physics has remained the same, as well as annoying situations; primitive design of everything – from locations to fights with bosses; boring bonus entertainment.
