The fail-safe formula “Three heroes with different abilities that you need to switch between in order to overcome obstacles” was invented in The Lost Vikings (if not earlier). And since then it has been working flawlessly. Platformer Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is another proof of this. And additional arguments in his favor are a gorgeous picture and the setting itself.

Battle for the crown

Well, it’s useless to talk about the visual part. Take a look at the video and screenshots – the game is beautifully drawn from an artistic point of view.

And in this style, it is not without reason that the influence of Celtic folklore is felt, which many appreciate and love about the same as Scandinavian mythology, because both there and there there are ancient traditions, a rich history and charismatic characters.

The abundance of green tones is a Celtic theme.

The setting of Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is the ancient Celtic land of Hibernia, where people and fairy-tale creatures (Fae Folk) made peace, symbolized by the Deer’s crown. This situation did not sit well with the demon mother Kaoranah, who invaded the home of the titular O’Conall clan and stole the ancient crown to destroy the peace between faeries and mortals. Now only three of the best warriors of the O’Conall clan can stop her: the skilled swordsman Kilcannon, the dexterous archer Clakshot, and the brutal strongman Haggish the Brute.

The story is told in very stylish art.

On their way, they visit many different locations, meet colorful characters and representatives of Celtic folklore. One huge boar on half-screen is worth something. Or an ironic skull, constantly mocking the heroes.

From the boar you have to drape several times.

Well, in general, the bosses in Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag are all interesting in their own way. One shoots almost a laser from his eyes (yeah, in the world of Celtic myths), the other throws his own head at our wards.

As you can see, he has a lot of heads, but not all of them are alive.

Each individually and all together!

As you already understood, Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag is a platform game not only about jumping and solving puzzles, but also about battles with both bosses and their smaller minions. Therefore, each of the trinity of Celtic heroes has unique abilities that help in combat and puzzles. Archer Kluckshot shoots not only at enemies, but also at switches that open something or activate platforms. And in a sliding tackle, she dodges attacks and crawls into narrow places – the only one of the whole trinity.

That’s for sure – you need to shoot not in the eyebrow, but in the eye.

The swordsman Kilkannon not only swings his weapon the fastest and dodges, repelling arrows and stones fired at him, but also knows how to soar on his red cloak – this is how he overcomes the abyss and rises up on sources of steam or wind.

On a cloak-helicopter…

Well, the strong Haggish plays the role of a local loader – he carries heavy objects to use them as a platform, put them on a button or drop them, breaking through the floor and opening a passage. However, he himself is able to jump and beat, breaking through the floor or stones blocking the path. And in battles, his main task is to break shields with his fists.

Without any respect for cultural values, Haggish throws sculptures somewhere.

All three are able to dodge and use special attacks – for example, Kilcannon has a sharp dash. And all three can be pumped for the spheres collected at the levels: they learn new tricks, increase their health, damage and critical strike chance. True, there are not enough spheres for everyone – you have to choose.

Although you can always replay past stages to replenish the supply of spheres.

Dynamics versus repetitions

Only one hero can be on the screen at a time, and we are required to alternate characters in time using their abilities. At the same time, much is built on interaction. Either we pull up the box with a strong man so that the archer climbs on it and hits the remote lever, then we also create a springboard from the air, on which, using his miracle cloak, the swordsman will rise.

Such situations are quite often repeated throughout the game – we shoot at the levers, drag and drop something heavy, soar on a raincoat …

Springboard mushrooms? We have also seen this many times.

The situation is saved, firstly, by extremely dynamic episodes, when you need to quickly, correctly and on the go switch between the characters in order, for example, to escape from the aforementioned boar – the score goes there for seconds, and if you play on the keyboard, it will be very difficult.

Here we do not run away, but rather jump away …

Secondly, there are still non-trivial puzzles, and interesting opponents, like ghosts, who need to be stunned with sounds.

Many amusing and difficult tests are associated with these rhombuses and squares.

And in general, there are many situations, everything is very rich and difficult. Plus, very dynamic battles, where again it is important to switch between heroes: flying creatures have appeared, which means you need an archer; enemies came out with shields – turn on the strong man. It just sounds primitive, but it plays really cheerfully.

In fights with bosses, you have to jump all the time.

Clan O’Conall and the Crown of the Stag uses the time-tested hero switching scheme, adds to this beautiful graphics, Celtic mythology, leveling and many difficult challenges. Against this background, the repetition of some situations in the game can be forgiven.

Pros: plot based on Celtic folklore; three colorful heroes, between which you need to switch in time; an abundance of difficult puzzles and battles; interesting boss fights; appropriate pumping system; excellent audiovisual performance.

Cons: some puzzles are repeated throughout the game; I would like more variety of locations.
