We play as a young legate whose father was killed as a result of a conspiracy. Fearing for her son’s life, his mother sent him to a high-ranking family friend who at that time was busy restoring order in the Greek provinces. It is not difficult to guess that soon it is our hero who becomes responsible for this campaign, which will eventually lead to the fact that we will conquer not only Greece, but also Gaul and North Africa, and in addition, determine the fate of both our legion and all of Rome.

Simultaneously with offensive and defensive actions, the personal story of the hero unfolds – after all, one must find out who killed his father and take revenge. A lot of interesting things happen in the process – either we try to poison one of the local rulers, then we go to negotiations with the Greek king, the main enemy, where there is also a choice whether to poison or not (Ancient Rome after all – such morals!), Then we penetrate under cover into his camp and steal an important political treaty, then we look for a traitor in our ranks, and then we decide his fate.

You have to plunge into political intrigues.

There are many dilemmas, including during random events, and many influence the attitude of partners towards us – these are several key ones for the story and for the Praetorian hero. Each of them has its own character traits: some are peaceful, others are warlike, some are prone to modesty, others to pride. Someone prefers to act honestly, and someone likes to be cunning. And now, depending on the decisions we have made and even the words spoken (to agree to poison or act openly, to answer modestly or arrogantly), partners approve of these actions or not. As a result, someone may even want to leave the squad.

Exactly the same system of moral principles applies to the centurions, whom we appoint as our assistants in the management of the legion and its outpost. Such people need to be hired, they are mortal and much more willing to leave the Legion if they are annoyed by our actions.

However, at least on the normal difficulty level, this has little effect. Much more important are other characteristics of associates. It must be said here that exactly half (if not more) of the game is a strategy on the global map. Here we move the hero’s squad, collect resources, discover new sources of them and other “points of interest”. The random events mentioned above also take place there, requiring one or another decision to be made – in their course one of the partners may be injured or we will have to join the battle.

There are many interesting things on the map.

But to capture a city or fortress, you need to send your legion there, and then decide which of the centurions will lead him into battle. Success is affected by various parameters, including class and command specialization: one is better at managing cavalry, another better at artillery, and so on.

We see the percentage of the probability of success, how large the possible losses and the volume of production will be. After choosing a commander, the battle goes on automatically in several stages, at each of which we choose one of the available tactics – protect the flanks, weaken the center and lure enemies there, rush to the attack or take a deaf defense, finish off everyone after the victory or replenish our ranks prisoners. As you progress, new tactics open up. Success is also affected by morale, the overall strength and size of the legion.

After the victory, we can still get a couple of chests with trophies.

Having gained the upper hand, you still need to successfully complete the mission to pacify the discontented, and then the region will come under our control – now you can send a legion to capture nearby sources of resources. For example, hunting grounds bring rations that go to the upkeep of our army. And the captured quarries, tanneries, iron mines, farms are needed to improve the outpost. There you can build an armory that opens craft, a hospital, a workshop for learning new tactics, a bathhouse (there an annoyed centurion immediately warms up) and barracks where new legionnaires are recruited. But for all this to work, you need to appoint someone to manage the buildings – and preferably someone who has better developed skills in this regard.

But perhaps the main resource in Expeditions: Rome is slaves, which are spent in large quantities on capturing resource sources (someone has to work in the quarries!), and replenished through special missions or after capturing enemy cities.

Archers rule, but not always

By tradition, the second gameplay component is turn-based battles on the ground. And in Expeditions: Rome they have become more interesting, larger, and more complex. On the one hand, everything is familiar – movement and action points, cover, the ability to occupy hills and receive bonuses for archers, the use of skills, which in this case depend on the weapon used.

Among random events, there are also very unusual ones.

But at the same time, great attention is paid to the ability to impose various conditions – fire, bleeding, exhaustion, mutilation. There are interactive objects and honest physics around – both we and the enemies can throw burning torches, spill oil that enhances the effect of fire, blow up boxes with Greek fire.

Everything here burns wonderfully and quickly.

Many missions are just built on having time to burn or undermine something (for example, ships or wood in the port). Reinforcements are constantly approaching the enemies – it’s not easy, and you need to correctly think over your actions so that you can complete the task in a few moves before it gets really hot. As often happens in such cases, archers are especially useful, but this is partially offset by the fact that some opponents use shields – arrows simply bounce off them. Therefore, it will not work with the forces of only archers – we need warriors capable of removing the enemy’s defense.

Among the controversial points in Expeditions: Rome are mountains of the same loot, which takes a long time to translate into fragments in the inventory. The latter are needed for crafting, but I would question its value.

Many tactical battles turned out to be very large-scale.

But in general, Expeditions: Rome is not just a good game, but an excellent and addictive one. In addition, the balance of complexity is perfectly maintained here – on the “hard” it is difficult both in fights and on the map, where a shortage of resources begins to be felt. But even at a normal level, you can’t relax.

Pros: interesting story; many characters with their own characters; addictive gameplay at the intersection of strategy, turn-based tactics and role-playing game; exciting battles and interesting missions; The game looks and sounds great and is well optimized.

Cons: a lot of superfluous and identical loot; craft does not seem to be in high demand; inconvenient use of consumables.
