In August 2020, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout took the media by storm. Multiplayer battle royales were expected to be innovative, and Fall Guys offered a completely different take on the genre, reminiscent of an interactive version of the Japanese show Takeshi Castle. Over time, the project was mentioned less and less in the information field, but it did not lose the audience – on Steam alone, thousands of users entered it every day. And now there are even more players – Fall Guys has not only appeared on new platforms, but also switched to a shareware distribution model.

Money rules the world

What happened can be considered a restart – instead of the seventh season, which was supposed to follow the sixth, we again got the first. One of the main innovations is full support not only for cross-play, but also for cross-progress. In this regard, linking an Epic Games account is required on all platforms – if you have already done this in Fortnite, then no extra manipulations are required: just download and play, automatically transferring progress between platforms. Along with this, the game disappeared from the Steam store and moved to EGS.

The other big change has to do with monetization. When Fall Guys was $20, the content was mostly free. The Battle Pass was crammed with cosmetic items, and both types of virtual currency could be earned just by playing. If they won often, they saved up crowns and could buy cool costumes at the local store, including those inspired by other video games.

The last costume in the battle pass is the coolest. And for the first level they give the Ezio costume from Assassin's Creed.

Now things are not so rosy. The Battle Pass has become larger (100 levels instead of 50), but from now on it is paid. It is worth noting that it was presented to everyone who launched the game at least once in two years, so nothing has changed significantly for the old audience. However, players who do not want to pay next time will need to reach at least level 66 of the pass in order to earn enough shmyaks – this is how the new paid currency is called.

Of course, there is a free version of the pass, as in any similar game. But compared to the old passes, there are noticeably fewer valuable gifts here. There are enough avatars, statuses, colors and victory poses, but there are practically no costumes – get the paid version. Without investments, it will be possible to accumulate 300 shmyaks using the pass, so that newcomers in the fourth season will be able to activate the paid version of the pass if they don’t want to give their hard-earned money.

With costumes, the situation has become worse outside of the pass. Previously, it was possible to buy the coolest clothes with the help of crowns, which were mainly earned by winning matches. With the transition to free-to-play, the crowns disappeared as a phenomenon, and those that the players managed to accumulate turned into a laurel pumpkin. As before, they can be used to buy the most common items in the store, but the most stylish items (including suits in crossovers) cannot be paid for with them.

The former owners of hundreds of crowns now own a million laurels, but there is no joy in this – in fact, crowns were a premium currency that was given for success, and now it is awarded for investing real money. So far, there are no new crossovers in the game, but sooner or later skins will appear in the store for which collectors will have to pay. In general, now the developers are not interested in the audience that just spends time in their game, and they want them to actively deposit money.

good old fun

There is good news – the gameplay has not changed. If you are not particularly fond of “cosmetics”, then the new season will only please you with innovations. This time, Fall Guys has added as many as seven new challenges, completely different from each other.

When you haven’t entered the game for a long time and you find yourself in such a crowd, you understand how much you miss this kind of gameplay.

In Fidget, players find themselves in a spinning arena filled with moving obstacles that they must run through or get blown away by the centrally located fan. Obstacle Course is probably the most fun map among those that require you to rush to the finish line without stopping, and there you can see one of the novelties of the season – speed gates. Thanks to them, such races become even more dynamic – you constantly change the trajectory of movement in order to maintain speed.

To pass “Jump-jump” you need to jump on trampolines and fly through the rings, earning points. And among the final tests, the “Ring of Tiles” can come across – players find themselves on a rotating cylinder with tiles disappearing when touched, so it’s important not to fall into the abyss and not to make too many holes in the cylinder.

It feels like the introduction of audiences with Xbox and Switch hasn't made matches that much easier.

All added entertainment is good in its own way and very diverse. I have not launched Fall Guys for more than a year and I am happy to spend time in it in the new season, and there is a desire to “close” the battle pass, since it was given away for free. Fall Guys still offers a unique competitive multiplayer experience, and now it has enough content to make the matches always different and not boring.

Keeps in the game and the updated system of “challenges”. In addition to the usual daily tasks (now there are five of them, not three), seasonal and weekly challenges have appeared. You need to get gold and silver medals, reach the final rounds, win competitions, play certain modes – nothing complicated, and for the most part, there is no need to keep track of “challenges”. Just play one match after another and over time you will receive rewards, including experience for the battle pass and laurels.

There will also be intermediate events in the game, where a few more prizes will be knocked out in a week. True, in the first of them the awards are so-so.

What’s on the Switch?

The Xbox port is no different – as Fall Guys looks on Sony consoles, it turned out to be the same on Microsoft platforms. Much more interesting is the Nintendo Switch version. In a good way, it should have appeared a long time ago, but it came out only now, but immediately with cross-progress support – I earned several levels on PS5, then downloaded the game on Switch and continued to finish off the challenges there.

However, there is a feeling that this version was not just delayed and even now is not fully ready. The main thing that catches your eye is the strange animations of opponents: if there are more than ten “beans” on the screen, the number of their animations seems to be cut down several times. Some opponents do not move their arms and legs at all, but simply slide along the ground. It does not cause inconvenience, but still. In addition, the menu on the Switch is slow: either it does not respond to buttons, or the section with the battle pass loads for several seconds. But you can play.

Perhaps the animations will still be fixed, but so far the developers have not commented.

The transition to freetoplay and the start of a new season did not turn Fall Guys into a different game. It’s more of a great excuse to get back into it and remember how funny and still unique it is. Unfortunately, monetization has become worse – those who want to collect the entire collection of costumes will find it increasingly difficult to do this. But the new maps have refreshed the gameplay, and the changed test system encourages you to spend more time in the game. Especially if you have already played Fall Guys and received a fresh battle pass as a gift.
