The protagonist Minit dies every 60 seconds, after which he resurrects in his house and tries to do something for a minute. A funny character resembling a duck is cursed – as soon as he picked up a sword lying on the shore, a timer immediately appeared in the corner of the screen. He does not know where to go and what to do, and only with the help of the player will the hero be able to get rid of the disease.

Moment of glory

The basic idea of Minit is original in many ways, but still not entirely new. A long time ago, Half-Minute Hero came out on the PSP, where you had to defeat the villain in 30 seconds. But there were some simplifications: time stopped in the settlements, the timer was restarted for a small amount, new allies appeared to help in the battles. There is nothing like this in Minit – if the character has three seconds left to live, nothing will save him.

Much more the game resembles the old The Legend of Zelda, having lost all colors except black and white. Despite the terribly outdated graphics, Minit is not without charm – the characters delight with comical design, there are jokes in the dialogues, and the locations differ from each other as noticeably as possible with such a visual style.

After leaving the first house, it is difficult to understand what to do next. You run out to the seashore, beat the crabs with your sword, enter the next location, and die. You come to life in the same house, go upstairs, cutting the bushes, you see a creature near the cave, it warns of danger. You go down, you can’t see anything because of the pitch darkness, you die again. You don’t experience stress due to the timer – the zones are not too far from each other, so in case of death you just follow the same path, but you do it faster.

Thanks to such mechanics in Minit, over time, you begin to think through a plan of action 60 seconds ahead, remembering the location of objects and understanding for what purpose you are heading to a certain zone. Therefore, the hero does not resurrect on his own – the player himself decides when he is ready to move on. If you didn’t manage to run in time with the right object to some place, you look for other ways or you don’t get distracted by conversations with the inhabitants. A separate button is responsible for instant death – when you realize that time is short, you can quickly die and start the race again.

There are several funny episodes connected with the timer. One of the characters, for example, pronounces words very slowly. I first started a conversation with him when the timer was 20 seconds, and he diligently pronounces each letter and played for time. Three seconds left, then two, then one, and he never finished the sentence. There are also some large locations where it will not be possible to run from edge to edge in the allotted time. Accelerating boots, sold in a shoe store for seven coins, will help here. But it is impossible to accumulate this amount without searching for secret passages and rooms.

Why be careful if in a few seconds you will still die?

Running out of time

There are a lot of caches in Minit, so after completing the main story (which lasts a little over two hours), there will be something to do for at least another hour. After the credits, you can either continue your journey in search of collectibles, or go to conquer New Game +. In it, the conditions are a little more complicated, although the essence remains the same – you also die after a few seconds and are reborn as you press the button. But there will be a lot of surprises along the way – either the items will be in other places, or there will be more opponents. Almost all components of the gameplay are modified here, including the timer and the health of the character.

However, it is not necessary to play the game twice, and it is not as difficult as it might seem because of the non-disappearing timer. The collected “hearts”, which increase the stock of health, remain in place after death. Found items, like a watering can, are neatly stacked near the protagonist’s house. The mansions in which the character is resurrected are placed in several copies around the world – where you were for the last time before death, there you will be reborn. It is a little confusing that when the hero visits the house, the timer does not restart, but this once again emphasizes the desire of the developers to deprive the player of the opportunity to somehow influence the time.

We can say that in this way the passage was stretched and without its unique mechanics, Minit would have been able to pass much faster. But this is its basis, the core, without which the game would become uninteresting. You memorize the location of opponents and look for ways to bypass them so as not to waste precious seconds on fights. You keep in mind the solutions to simple puzzles that you solve on the go in order to quickly run through some location and get to the next zone. And the fact that the player has only 60 seconds, and not 15 or 30 minutes, allows you not to be upset because of every failed race. Well, you lost a few seconds, so what? Immediately revived – and ran back.

Even in a black-and-white “pixel” game, someone is dissatisfied with the authorities.

The map is not so huge that you can forget about the location of certain zones. Having received the next item, you start scrolling in your head where you saw objects with which you can now interact. This is reminiscent of the old Zeldas – for example, in A Link to the Past, Link with a glove could lift stones that blocked the path, and you roughly remembered where exactly you saw them during the study. And in the very first part, the bracelet allowed you to move boulders to look for secrets. The same thing happens here – different things are used both to complete the story and to search for hidden chests with coins.

The feeling that you managed to do something at the last second is difficult to convey, but here it will arise all the time. Especially in those moments when in a minute I managed to see a new location, and take a look at all the objects placed there, and discover a cache or solve a simple puzzle. The design of the puzzles is not as exciting as I experienced in the recent Gorogoa, but thanks to the timer and other restrictions (at first the hero cannot swim and moves rather slowly), the gameplay pleases at every turn.

The authors managed to achieve diversity in the gameplay, despite the simplest control: one button here is responsible for the attack, the other for death. Short of the movement keys (or the stick on the gamepad), that’s where the possibilities end.

I want to scold Minit only for the storyline, in which they seemed to be trying to raise some unusual topic, but did not. A certain man in a cap constantly offers the duck to go to the factory, since she has a cursed sword with her, and over time, the player becomes clear what is at stake and why the hero was sent there. The story is sketchy, as in the same “Zelda”, but it was possible to repeat the experience of Celeste – to bring the genre to a new level and offer something deeper.

Minit game review

Nothing would have happened if the sword had remained lying on the shore.

***

But not all games should delight with stories and make the player think about the important. The Minit is cheap, runs in an evening, and brings back memories of classic projects. She takes the best out of them, and with the exception of graphics, none of her components seem out of date. And the original gameplay mechanics make it unlike other adventures. And another game with a great soundtrack will appear in your collection – this has already become the hallmark of Devolver Digital and the games it publishes.

Pros: an original idea and an excellent implementation of the idea with a hero dying every minute; a large number of caches and secrets; constant surprises, despite the simple gameplay; great soundtrack.

Cons: The story could have been deeper.
