This game has such a melodious style, such a narrative language. “The Mooseman” (“The Man”) is an original project based on the mythology of the Komi peoples. The ancient myths and legends on which the plot is based are carefully assembled into a single, harmonious and very atmospheric picture. The player is waiting for immersion in a special world of amazing stories, filled with spirits and living according to its own, unusual laws.

The plot of the game, as stated in the preface, is “an artistic reconstruction of myths.” Here is a brief summary of what our ancestors came up with, and “The Mooseman” meticulously and talentedly embodied:

Elk Yong is the creator of the universe and people. From the shell of a duck egg, Yong created a world divided into three tiers: the lower world with dark entities is located in the gloomy depths of the ocean, the middle world is our human, and the upper world is the haven of the gods. Yen has seven shaman sons – human-hairs capable of moving between worlds… We, the players, overcome this very thorny path for one of the shamans.

It is important that the game has a real historical value, one might even say authenticity – it was developed in close cooperation with the Perm Museum of Local Lore. The project is based on real museum artifacts – bizarre (and therefore not boring!) archaeological finds. As the story progresses, the player discovers strange totems related to the so-called “Perm animal style”. We learn about each find directly from the pages of local history books. It is interpreted what exactly is depicted and the place where the find was found. For example, they found a wonderful artifact, and the menu is already waiting for an explanation: “Anthropozoomorphic idol with four heads and wings. Discovered in a bank scree on the Yazva River in 1965 …”. A fascinating excursion into history.

The game has an authentic and minimalistic yet memorable art design. This is a stylish, discreet, Scandinavian project restrained in colors, in which the story is told with images, silhouettes, light and shadow, metaphor. The ethnic sound inspired by Komi folk motifs and unexpected voice acting, again in the Komi language with subtitles, help the perception.

On the screen we see the text, which is simultaneously voiced in the original language.  The game plunges into the ethnic atmosphere!  I have never skipped these plot-linking inserts (and I don’t even know if this is possible - I just didn’t need to check!).  I listened with great pleasure.💕

“Man” was created in 2017 by a Russian studio with a wonderful hooligan name “Morteshka”. At the same time, the role of a screenwriter, programmer, game designer and artist was played by one person – Vladimir Beletsky. That’s what is called, where he was born (and the creator of “The Man-Kolos”, they write, from Perm), and it came in handy there. 🙂

This easy-to-use platformer (the task is to go and solve side puzzles), unfortunately, is small – it takes 2-3 hours to complete. However, perhaps this is a sufficient volume for such a project, which is not the easiest to understand (in order not to lose the thread of history, it is better to read all the intricate legends and descriptions of the finds). And yes, the game will not impress with the variety of gameplay, it is in some way a visual encyclopedia of local lore with activities (if only this way local history and history were taught!). However, “The Mooseman” definitely deserves attention as a solid, thoughtful and very atmospheric work. Would I have known without him what the “Perm animal style” is? ..

By the way, probably, many have already appreciated the recent release – the studio “Morteshka” released its second project – “The Black Book”, now in the Old Slavic style. I haven’t launched the game yet, but I already bought it just for the sake of support. Game design patriots definitely deserve it. ✊
