An anime-style Diablo, a kawaii roguelike, Zengeon can be called by many different names, but the essence of this will not change. There are several beautiful chans to choose from (and, of course, only one young man with a sword) who fight evil, using and pumping their skills, pick up various upgrades and new abilities, spoil state property, destroying boxes and barrels, from which drops that something useful, and defeat difficult bosses. Moreover, everyone has only one attempt – after death, everything has to be started from the very beginning.

Hero on heroines

The plot is simple – the students of the Star Academy took a special training course to protect the Earth from evil spirits. During a lunar eclipse, the barrier was broken, and hordes of demons poured onto the planet. After that, our heroes come into action.

Having chosen one of the five protagonists, we set off to destroy the reptiles. You need to go through several stages without stopping and without normal saves. Every two or three levels, a new boss enters the field. And so – until the very end. Lost – start over. At the same time, on a new passage, the level structure may change, although not much – the “randomness” here is largely conditional.

Each hero has access to four unique skills and five artifacts, which are somehow connected with the story and provide different passive bonuses. All characters differ in the difficulty of playing for them, attack radius, damage level, available weapons that cannot be changed during the passage – upgrades for abilities can fall out of enemies, but not new equipment.

Initially, not all characters are available. Those that aren’t easy to play are only unlocked after you’ve been fighting for the easier defenders of Earth for a while.

Zengeon game review

The game looks very nice and juicy.

They are so different…

The difference in the game for different characters is really felt. The simplest and most effective is just a young man with a sword. He powerfully and quickly smashes enemies to pieces in close combat, makes sharp jerks, leaving the fire, and in difficult situations quickly retreats, launching his blade into the crowd of opponents, which spins and spins and grinds enemies into atoms.

Something similar to him is a girl with an umbrella, who can also effectively knead everyone in close combat. But the rest of the beautiful chans use ranged attacks that require more accurate targeting.

But even playing for a young man, it will not be easy for you from the first attempt to go through all the stages to the very end. You need to get used to each character and his skills, feel the fighting style and tactics. And there are many enemies, they are all really different – some explode after death, others heal allies, others spit poison and so on. As usual, there are bosses with whom jokes are generally bad, and even lock us with them in a closed arena. And consumables, the same “healers”, are not allowed to be used just like that – first you need to accumulate energy by actively shredding enemies.

Friends rush to the rescue

As you progress, the heroes become stronger, but the usual leveling, when we open something at new levels, invest skill points and improve, is not in Zengeon. Instead, for the coins collected as we progress (they drop out of both enemies and broken environmental objects), we buy various artifacts in special machines, which, as a rule, with a certain chance, allow us to activate some useful effect – a fire or ice storm, rockfall, summoning creatures and so on. As a result, after some time, your character will hit enemies surrounded by various useful auras, periodically dealing elemental damage, and with a crowd of familiars on a leash. And all this happens in a fairly short period of time (the levels are small), which allows you to very quickly feel the progress of the player, how he skillfully (or not very) pumped the protagonist.Zengeon game review

Enemies often push us in a closed space.

The point is that there are always two artifacts to choose from, and with your choice, almost like in a collectible card game, you determine the set of abilities available to the hero, his tactics and fighting style.

We also find consumable items – “healers” or, for example, the call of birds attacking demons. You can convert them into an upgrade of current consumables by replenishing their supply. In addition, sometimes upgrades drop out for pumping one of the four unique skills of each of the fighters.

However, the main thing that will help you overcome all difficulties is co-op (online or local) with friends. You can invite players to your session right during the fight. This is especially true in Guard Mode, where we need to fight waves of demons, earning all the same coins along the way and buying improvements and artifacts for them.

Explosive dashes are especially useful in boss fights.

It seems that there is nothing special in all this – another cooperative hack and slash with role-playing elements. But, firstly, the anime style gives it a twist. Secondly, graphics, music, management, art design, beautifully drawn chan – you need to see how well everything is done for an unknown indie project from the Steam ghetto. Zengeon is just plain fun to play – but in this case you don’t need more.

Pros: dynamic gameplay that does not forgive even one mistake on the level; really different heroes who differ in skills, style and difficulty of passing; a lot of upgrades and artifacts for pumping characters; well-implemented cooperative; excellent external design; well chosen music.

Cons: the levels are quite short; There is practically no plot as such.
